Mucormycosis is not a new disease, neither it is infectious

COVID-19 patients who have diabetes, cancer or kidney ailment and have less immunity are observed these days to suffer from Mucormycosis. Patients suffering from diabetes, cancer or kidney disease are found to be more prone to Mucormycotic. So far 46 Mucormycotic cases have been registered in the civil hospital. Mucormycoctic people are being treated for free at the Ahmedabad civil hospital.

Ahmedabad (Gujarat): Earlier patients with serious disease such as cancer or kidney ailments were found suffering from Mucormycosis. These days patients of COVID-19 having comorbidity such as diabetes are found to be suffering from sinus or fungal infection resulting in Mucormycosis. It is possible to cure Mucormycosis. Only a quick and proper treatment can provide safety from this disease.

Ahmedabad civil hospital’s ENT surgeon Dr Devang Gupta explained the symptoms of Mucormycotic to ETV Bharat. He advises patients with such symptoms to immediately consult an ENT specialist. The treatment of Mucormycosis is believed to be very expensive. However, because of the sensitive state government, it is being treated free of cost.

Symptoms

Old people suffering from diabetes who have less immunity are found to be suffering from sinus infection in their nose. They get frequent cold and blocked nose, trouble in breathing and bad odour from nose, inflation of sinus which all are symptoms of Mucormycotic. The portion around the nose an neck turns black. If any of these symptoms are noticed, one should immediately consult an ENT surgeon.

Treatment

On noticing the symptoms of Mucormycosis a patient is advised to get CT Scan, MRI test reports. Biopsy of the fungus sample is also done. These reports would reveal the spread of fungus in eyes, brain and other body parts as well as its severity. The surgeon tries to find out the root of the fungus with the help of state of the art MRI and then perform the surgery. The surgeon finds out which muscles are affected by the fungus.

Dose of injection varies from 12 to 15

For the treatment of Mucormycotic a patient is given Amphotycin B injection for 15 to 21 days. If needed, a laproscope is used to remove fungus from the nose. Thereafter too the injections continue.
