Ahmedabad (Gujarat): A photo went viral on social media in which Vishwas Jayant Rathod, a Gram Rakshak Dal is seen driving a motorcycle without a helmet and speaking on his mobile phone.
The photo captured from Sardar Patel Ring Road of Ahmedabad. Also, the number plate of the personnel's bike GJ27CS5602 was clearly visible in the photo.
As soon as the photo went viral, a user from social media asked the police what action it would take against one of their own personnel for flouting rules so blatantly.
Tejas Patel, traffic DCP, said, we took action as per law. The police cannot be spared from rules. Everyone who breaks the rules will be penalised.
The cop was fined Rs. 1,000 for talking while driving and Rs. 100 for driving without helmet, he added.
The new Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 was earlier notified by the Ministry of Law and Justice under the Government of India and came into effect from 1st September 2019. The legislation was previously introduced in 2017 but couldn't pass the Rajya Sabha and lapsed with the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha.
The 2019 Bill was tabled in both the houses by the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. The Bill aims to enforce stricter penalties for road traffic violations.
