Zafar Islam poised to win UP's lone RS seat

The Rajya Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, which fell vacant due to death of Amar Singh, saw two nominations from BJP, one of which was withdrawn later.

New Delhi: Days ahead of the last date for withdrawal of candidature for by-elections to the lone Rajya Sabha seat, which fell vacant due to death of Amar Singh, Govind Narayan Shukla of BJP has withdrawn his candidature.

Now only party spokesperson Syed Zafar Islam is in the fray and is poised to win the seat.

BJP source said it had filed nomination of Dubey as Zafar Islam was unwell.

Amar Singh had died in a Singapore hospital on August 1 due to kidney-related complications. His term as a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh was till July 2022.
