The residents of New Ashok Nagar have no other option but to depend on the irregular visits by water tankers in their area, as the locality has no water pipelines. People usually store enough water to last them a few days as the water tankers do not come to the area every day.

New Delhi: With no pipeline present in East Delhi's New Ashok Nagar area, residents have to go through extreme trouble just to get water for their daily needs.

The only source of water for the residents are water tankers, which come to the area at irregular intervals.

"Today, water tanker has come after three days. It does not come unless we complain. Hence, we store enough water for a few days," said a woman who had come to get water from the tanker.

The sight of people lining up with huge cans and bottles is not uncommon in the area as people have no other option but to store enough water to last them a few days.

Since many people cannot carry multiple cans themselves, they load it onto a cart, which transports the cans to their homes.

"I am now carrying water cans for four people. We cannot even complain to anyone as no politician ever visits the area," remarked Sonu, who operates the cart to transport the water cans.

Echoing similar views, an elderly woman Draupadi, added that her health issues were making things extremely tough for her.

"The local MLA is doing nothing. Water is the biggest problem we have. I have the problem of walking, so I take the water back home in a rickshaw," she said.

With schools currently shut, many children can also be seen standing in the queues to get their supply of water.

"I don't have school now, but I used to have afternoon classes earlier. So I used to get the water in the morning, and then proceed to school," said Sumit, a student.
