New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Mizoram have witnessed maximum number of deaths in road accidents in 2019, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report stated.
In 37,537 different road accidents that took place in Uttar Pradesh, 23,285 people have died and 22,251 others were injured. Similarly, Punjab registered 6,316 road accidents in 2019 causing 4,613 deaths and 3,726 injuries.
In Mizoram, as many as 63 people have died in 57 road accidents and 25 were reportedly injured, the NCRB report said. Further, the country has registered 1,54,732 deaths in 4,37,396 road accidents in 2019.
"Road accident cases in the country have decreased from 4,45,514 in 2018 to 4,37,396 in 2019. However, the fatalities in road accidents have increased by 1.3 percent (from 1,52,780 in 2018 to 1,54,732 in 2019)," the NCRB report said. The rate of deaths per thousand vehicles in 2019 has increased slightly to 0.61 in 2019, the NCRB report said.
During 2019, two wheeler have accounted for maximum fatal road accidents (58,747 deaths), contributing 38.0 percent of total road accidental deaths, followed by trucks/lorries (22,637 deaths, 14.6 percent), cars (21,196 deaths, 13.7 percent), and buses (9192 deaths, 5.9 percent). Majority of deaths due to two wheeler accidents were reported in Maharashtra (7137) and Uttar Pradesh (6431) accounting for 12.1 percent and 10.9 percent of total deaths.

Large number of deaths due to trucks and lorries accidents (5,272 out of 22,367) were reported in Uttar Pradesh accounting for 23.3 percent. Deaths of 13.7 percent (1398 out of 10199) of pedestrians in road accidents were reported in Maharashtra during 2019.
"As per the road classification, the national highways which has a share of only 1.9 percent of the total road length (1.14 lakh kms out of 58 lakh kms) accounted for highest road accidents, contributing 29.4 percent of the total road accidents," the NCRB said.
State highways having the share of 2.97 percent (1.75 lakh kms), of the total road length have reported 2.5 percent of road accidents in the country."However, a considerable number of road accidents were also reported on other roads. These accounted for 45.5 percent of total such accidents during 2019," the NCRB said in its report.
Maximum number of road accidents on state highways in the country occurred in Tamil Nadu (19,279). Maximum fatalities in road accidents on state highways were reported in Uttar Pradesh (6,385 out of 39,624 deaths) which accounted for 16.1 percent of total deaths due to road accidents in state highways, followed by Maharashtra (9.6 percent) during 2019.
While examining the reasons for such a large number of road accidents, the NCRB has found that over speeding accounts for 59.6 percent of total accidents causing 86241 deaths. Dangerous and careless driving accounted for 1,12,519 accidents (25.7 percent) causing 42,557 deaths in 2019.
Driving under influence of drug/alcohol contributed 1.7 percent of total accidents which resulted in 2972 deaths in the country in 2019. "2.69 percent (11303 out of 4,37,443 cases) of such accidents were due to poor weather conditions," the NCRB report said.
