New Delhi: Prices of tomatoes have hiked in the national capital as the cost of transportation of vegetables has increased due to the fule being expensive.
The most significant rise has been registered in the price of tomatoes. Vegetable traders say prices have risen due to crop failure during the rainy season, excessive heat and rise in petrol and diesel prices.
A team of ETV Bharat reached a vegetable market in Mehrauli in South Delhi to get hang of the situation on the ground. When we spoke to the shopkeepers they expressed their pain and said that tomato rates have doubled due to rising prices of petrol and diesel. Due to this, the number of buyers in the market has come down due to which the sale of tomatoes has come down significantly.
They further added that due to the scorching heat, the remaining tomatoes get spoiled due to which we have to suffer a huge loss.
The retail price of tomato was reported to be between Rs 50-100 per kg in Delhi on Monday.
Reports say tomato prices have seen a surge in the past one-two week against the usual price of Rs 20-30 per kg, burning a hole in the common man's pocket.
