New Delhi: Vimala Sharma, wife of former President of India Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma is among the oldest to have recovered from COVID-19 in the national capital. The 93-year-old was discharged from AIIMS trauma centre on Thursday evening, just days after she tested positive for COVID-19.

Her son Ashutosh Dayal Sharma told ETV Bharat, " The most strange thing about this disease is that no family can visit the patient. My mother was in hospital without anyone around her in the hospital for 18 days and we used to worry a lot."

While admitted, she was not put on ventilator support as her respiratory conditions remained normal during the course of her treatment for 18 days.

During this time, he only spoke with her twice over the phone. He advised other patients to not lose hope, and the need to maintain strong willpower in testing time and why it is important not to panic.

According to the family, her oxygen levels started dipping on June 5 after which she was tested, and her reports came positive on June 6. Fifteen days after the admission, she was tested again and her reports came out negative.

"On Tuesday, we started planning the discharge. The whole family is extremely happy that we got her home. It's still a long road... she is on nasal oxygen support of 2-3 litres per hour," said Ashutosh.

She was on a high flow nasal cannula - a technique through which a high amount of oxygen can be delivered.
