New Delhi: A 36-year-old man on his way home after buying medicines from a hospital was fatally mowed down by a speeding BMW near the Moti Bagh Metro station at the national capital during the early hours of Sunday. According to eyewitnesses, the woman who was behind the wheel of the speeding BMW was allegedly returning from a party at Greater Kailash post midnight.
A short video clip showed the woman losing control of the vehicle. The luxury vehicle first hits a generator on the road side before it ploughs into the two-wheeler borne man. The deceased has been identified as Ajay Gupta who ran a grocery shop.
The driver of the BMW has been identified as a 28-year-old woman and has been arrested by the police. She is a resident of Ashok Vihar and is an architect by profession. The Delhi police came to know about the accident when they received a PCR call at 4.08 am and dispatched their PCR units to attend the case.
According to police, they found the only the mangled bike and the damaged car near the Moti Nagar flyover. Neither the victim nor the car driver were present at the spot. Later, the police traced the injured to ESI hospital where he succumbed to the injuries. The woman who caused the accident was subsequently picked up.
The woman driver and the injured were not there when we reached there, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Ghanshyam Bansal said. She admitted the injured to ABG Hospital from where he was shifted to ESI Hospital by his relatives, the DCP added. The injured was not in a position to record his statement when the police reached him, he added.
The deceased, Gupta is survived by his wife and two children, who live in Basai Darapur. Gupta had left home late at night to get medicines for himself, his family members told the police. The police have registered a case under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and later section 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. Gupta's body has been sent to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for post-mortem.
