India will convert 50 lakh hectares degraded land to fertile land: Prakash Javadekar

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar announced on Tuesday that India has set a target to make 50 lakh hectares of degraded land to fertile land by 2030. The process will be carried out by adopting the landscape restoration approach.

New Delhi: India has set a target to transform over 50 lakh hectares of land affected by desertification or degradation fertile, within the next decade, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar announced on Tuesday.

"The process will be carried out by adopting the landscape restoration approach, which is crucial to converting the infertile land to fertile. The process involves a scientific approach and techniques," said Javadekar.

India is hosting the Conference of Parties (COP) 14 of United Nations convention from September 2 to 13 to combat desertification.

"India will lead the world in the right direction and seek cooperation of all countries to combat desertification for the next two years. About 200 countries have confirmed their participation, more than 3000 delegates, UN officials and 100 ministers will attend, out of which 94 have confirmed ," the Minister said .

The Minister pointed out that the conference was crucial as one-third of the world's land area was either affected by desertification or degraded.

"This turns out to be 40,000 lakh hectares. In the Indian context, 29 per cent of land surface or 960 hectares is degraded and we have to make it fertile," he said.

Addressing a press conference ahead of the event, Javadekar added that the country would implement the resolutions adopted at the New Delhi Declaration.

A centre of excellence to combat desertification of the fertile land would be set up at the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, which will study the causes of desertification of the fertile land and devise solutions.

"This centre will conduct the baseline mapping, mapping of the existing schemes and programmes, setting priorities and achieving transformative projects," he added.

Body:While speaking at the curtain raiser event of the Conference of Parties (COP-14) of the UN Conference to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), he said, "India also has 29 percent of the degraded land due to overexploitation, overgrazing, deforestation and poor irrigation practices. We have to restore it back and therefore we have taken a target to make 50 lakh hectares of degraded land into fertile land by 2030."

This year India is hosting COP-14 event of UNCCD because of which India will take over COP presidency from China for the next 2 years, 2019-21.

"India will lead in combating desertification for the next two years, we will lead the world in the right direction and seek cooperation of all countries. About 200 countries have confirmed their participation, more than 3000 delegates, UN officials and 100 ministers will attend, out of which 94 have confirmed already," the Minister added. He also informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may address the Conference.



Conclusion:According to the official data of the Ministry, one third of the total geographic land of the world has been degraded, that is 40,000 lakh hectares. Out of this, India is having 29 percent of the total degraded land which is 960 lakh hectares.
