New Delhi: Hours after the government and the opposition reached the consensus to allocate around fifteen hours to discuss the Motion of Thanks during which parties could raise their issues on the farmers' protest, activist Kavita Krishnan called it "pointless" and said this should have been done before passing the law.

Discussion over farmers' issue in parliament is pointless: Kavita Krishnan

Speaking to ETV Bharat, All India Progressive Women's Association (AIPWA) secretary Kavita Krishnan said, " The discussion on farm laws in the Parliament is pointless. They have essentially passed the farm laws by voice vote, they should have discussed this before passing it."

"Essentially, I don't think that there is any point of a discussion on the laws. First, they should take the laws back and they should pass the laws after doing the discussion on it. You can't say that OK...this is the done deal and now we will discuss it," she added.

Several student unions and social activists on Wednesday protested in Delhi's Mandi House against the three new farm laws passed by the government demanding them to be withdrawn.

Krishnan claimed that the contentious farm laws will not only help the corporates to take over the agricultural lands in their hands but they will also result in higher food prices for the consumers and the end of the ration distribution system for the poor.

Meanwhile, farmers from different parts of the country continued to hold the protests in the national capital demanding a complete withdrawal of three farm laws - Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020.
