New Delhi: With the second Covid-19 wave once again rendering millions of poor jobless and triggering another exodus of migrants, the Central government on May 5 gave ex-post facto approval to a proposal to distribute monthly 5 kg free foodgrains to about 80 crore PDS beneficiaries during the May-June period under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY).
However, according to sources, the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government is yet to provide free ration to people in the national capital even after procuring 10,024 Million Tonnes (MT) of foodgrains from the Food Corporation of India.
Under the PMGKAY scheme in Delhi, a monthly 5 kg foodgrain per person has to be given free of cost for about 71.40 lakh beneficiaries covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), including those covered under Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
Earlier, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced that free ration will be given to all ration cardholders in the national capital for the next two months.
The Chief Minister had also announced financial assistance of Rs 5,000 each for all autorickshaw and taxi drivers in Delhi.
