Delhi Assembly Elections: Key battles in the fray

In the wake of Delhi Assembly elections, all the three major political parties - the BJP, Congress and AAP have left no stone unturned to woo the voters.

New Delhi: As Delhi is all set to choose its next government, all the three major political parties in fray left no stone unturned to woo the voters.

While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is seeking re-election backed by its “freebies” and other populist schemes, the elections are crucial for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after a series of electoral setbacks — the party has lost five elections within a span of one year.

Similarly, Congress is fighting on 66 seats and its ally Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on the remaining 4 seats.

The Congress, which led Delhi for three consecutive terms before its 2013 and 2015 routs, doesn’t have a mass leader in the national capital following the death of former chief minister Sheila Dikshit last year.

Key battles of Delhi elections 2020:

• Arvind Kejriwal will be contesting from New Delhi seat against BJP’s Sunil Yadav and first-timer Romesh Sabharwal of the Congress.
• Deputy chief minister, AAP's Manish Sisodia will take on Ravi Negi of BJP from the Patparganj constituency.
• In Chandni Chowk, Alka Lamba who crossed over to the Congress from AAP will take on Parlad Singh Sawhney from AAP and Suman Kumar Gupta of the BJP.
• AAP leader Somnath Bharti will face off in Malviya Nagar, as the favourite in the three-horse race against Shailendra Singh Moti of BJP and Neetu Verma of the Congress.
• The Model Town constituency will see an interesting fight between Kapil Mishra of the BJP, Akhilesh Pati Tripathi of AAP and Akansha Ola of the Congress.
• AAP's Atishi Marlena will contest from Kalkaji against BJP's Dharamvir Singh and debutant Shivani Chopra of Congress.
• In Dwarka, Adarsh Shashtri who switched to Congress from AAP will take on Vinay Kumar Mishra from AAP and Praduman Rajput of the BJP.

It is to be noted that in the 2015 assembly election, AAP had stormed to power by winning 67 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly. The BJP had won three seats while Congress drew a blank in the last Assembly election.
