Indian National Congress leader Randeep Surjewala has questioned the BJP government if this is the 'New India' that it had promised.

"It is the first time in 72 years of India's Independence that Delhi cops have held a protest. But the Home Ministry that holds complete power over the police force is completely silent," he said.

He called this strike a 'failure of Amit Shah's leadership'.

Questioning the law and order situation of Delhi he said," What about the law and order situation of Delhi. The cops protested for about 11-12 hours."

"When will the whole matter be resolved," he further questioned.

He said that the people deserve and demand answers to these questions. The conspiratorial silence that the BJP government has maintained so far needs to be broke, he said.

Delhi Police personnel ended their nearly 11-hour-long protest after assurance by senior officers that their grievances will be addressed.

Addressing the protesters, Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Satish Golcha urged them to end stir and resume duty, while assuring them that a review petition will be filed against the Delhi High Court order in connection with a clash between cops and lawyers at the Tis Hazari Courts Complex.

The senior officer said the injured policemen will get an ex-gratia of at least Rs 25,000.

Kerala IPS Association condemns attack on Delhi police officials

The IPS Association's Kerala chapter on Tuesday strongly condemned the attack on Delhi police personnel by lawyers of Delhi based courts.

In a resolution here, the association said the "barbaric" behaviour of the advocates has no place in a democracy and it was a direct challenge to the rule of law.

The association said it would support any action of the CIPSA in approaching the courts of law to initiate stringent and exemplary legal action against the perpetrators of the crime.

It also resolved to stand with the members of Delhi police and with the officers affected by the "abominable and unfortunate events".

LG reviews situation, says imperative to ensure justice done impartially

Lt Governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday reviewed the situation in the wake of an unprecedented protest by Delhi Police personnel following clashes with lawyers, and said it was imperative to ensure justice is done impartially in the entire matter.

According to a statement issued by the LG office, Special Commissioner (intelligence) Praveer Ranjan briefed the lieutenant governor about the prevailing situation and also on related high court orders.

The LG observed that advocates and police are important pillars of criminal justice system and they should work in complete harmony, it said.

"In the wake of the recent unfortunate incident, it is imperative to restore the trust between the two and also to ensure that justice is done impartially in the entire matter," the statement quoted Baijal as saying.

Protesting police personnel demand revoking of licences of lawyers behind assault

Delhi Police's protesting personnel on Tuesday demanded that the licences of lawyers who assaulted their colleagues be revoked and the transfer of the officers involved in the Tis Hazari clash last week rescinded.

"We also want a police association, provide better treatment to injured policemen, reinstate suspended police personnel. Strict action should be taken against advocates and the FIR," said one of the protesters, reading out the list of demands.

Tuesday's unprecedented protests were triggered by two attacks on their colleagues, one on Monday when a policeman was beaten up outside the Saket district court, and another on Saturday after a parking dispute between an on-duty policeman and a lawyer which led to at least 20 security personnel and several advocates being injured.

Demanding strict action against the lawyers, the police personnel also want an FIR to be registered against every lawyer involved in the Tis Hazari case.

They also want FIRs filed against the policemen by the lawyers in connection with the Tis Hazari case to be quashed.

Thousands of police personnel protested outside the Police Headquarters on Tuesday to demand action against those involved in an attack on their colleague outside the Saket court, the unprecedented scenes of police protest leading their chief urging them to resume duty.

"The entire situation is unfortunate. On one side, there are lawyers who provide justice to people and on other hand, police give security to people. They (lawyers and police) are the people on whom the common man has confidence. We want immediate solution to the police-lawyer standoff," Sisodia said at a press conference.

The issue should have been handled at the appropriate time to avoid the conflict, he said.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Tuesday filed an application in the Delhi High Court seeking clarification of its Sunday's order in the Tiz Hazari clash.

The ministry has moved clarification on the aspect that the order pertains to only the FIRs that have been registered on November 2 when the incident took place and is not applicable to any subsequent event.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday put out a tweet supporting the Delhi Police, even as cops continued to protest in New Delhi against the clash with lawyers at Tis Hazari Court earlier this month. The minister, however, later deleted the post from the microblogging site.

"Being a cop is a thankless job. But they don't do it for thanks. Police officers put their lives on the line every day. They are damned if they do, and damned even if they don't. What gets lost in all the anti-police rhetoric is the family left at home while a policeman serves," he had tweeted.

Minutes later, the Rijiju deleted his tweet and wrote, "It's not a question of supporting any group. Just let's not take the law into our hands."

A policeman and a civilian filed two FIRs on Tuesday, alleging they were assaulted by lawyers at the Saket Court Complex in South Delhi, an official said.

The FIRs were filed at Saket police station in connection with the assaults on Monday.

An on-duty policeman was thrashed by advocates outside the Saket Court Complex. In a video of the purported incident, lawyers were seen beating up the policeman riding a bike. One of the lawyers also slapped him. When the policeman was leaving the spot, the lawyer also hit his bike with his helmet.

The civilian alleged he was beaten up by lawyers at the court complex.

Delhi Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik addressed the police personnel protesting at the Police Head Quarters in ITO. Reacting over the situation, he said that FIR has been registered in the incidents in which police personnel were assaulted.

New Delhi: Hundreds of Delhi Police personnel on Tuesday gheraoed the Police Headquarters (PHQ) at ITO here to protest against repeated incidents of violence against them by lawyers. A parking row between police personnel and lawyers on Saturday had escalated leading to violence and arson at the Tis Hazari Court complex.

At least 20 police personnel and several lawyers were injured and many vehicles were damaged in the incident. The lawyers alleged that the police fired at them.

The Delhi High Court on Sunday ordered a judicial inquiry into the violence by a team comprising a retired judge, Directors of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Intelligence Bureau and Vigilance.

On the Delhi High Court's order, Special Commissioner (in-charge Law and Order) Sanjay Singh was removed on Monday and Special Commissioner R S Krishnaiya was given the additional charge.
