New Delhi: The national capital recorded 1,984 fresh COVID-19 cases on Monday with the city government creating 149 new containment zones to check the spread of the disease.
The active COVID-19 case count stood at 27,123, down from 29,228 the previous day, according to the latest bulletin issued by the health department. With this, the number of deaths in the national capital has gone up to 5,235.
With a significant increase in COVID-19 testing, a large number of containment zones have come up across the capital city, covering new localities.
Last week, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the recent surge in COVID-19 cases was due to the massive scaling up of testing from 20,000 tests per day previously to 60,000 tests every day.
He also said that experts believe Delhi has gone past the peak of its second wave of COVID-19 infection and the number of positive cases is likely to go down now due to the steps taken by the government.

The chief minister said the number of containment zones has gone up from around 550 in mid August to over 2,000 now.
The official data showed that nearly one-fourth of the total active cases in the city are located within containment zones in each of the 11 revenue districts. The South-West district, with 684 containment zones, topped the list of districts. It was followed by 527 and 333 containment zones in the West and North West districts respectively while the North East district had 181 containment zones.
According to the city's health minister Satyendar Jain testing has been increased and smaller containment zones are being created, which has resulted in an increase in the number of containment zones.
