Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind on Monday condemned the Delhi Police's "brutality" against the Jamia Millia Islamia University students and said its actions were "cruel and oppressive".

The Muslim body's president Maulana Arshad Madani, in a statement, said it was against any form of violence.

"What the Delhi Police, under the name of maintaining law and order, did with the students who were inside the campus, is cruel and oppressive, and we strongly condemn it," he said.

"But question is that why did violence occur during the protests and who is behind it? It should be investigated freely and fairly," he added.

Handful of people trying to provoke the rest: Vijay Goel

Speaking to ETV Bharat on the violence in Jamia Millia Islamia, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Goel claimed that only a "handful" of people were trying to provoke the rest of the people.

"The Citizenship Amendment Act is in the interest of the nation. It does not take away the rights of any community. Muslims are safe in India," he said, adding that Aam Aadmi leaders were the ones to politicise the issue through their provocative speeches.

Amnesty slams police action against Jamia students

The Amnesty International India on Monday slammed the police for its "violent" action against students at Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) protesting against the amended citizenship act.

It said the allegations that the police brutally beat up and sexually harassed Jamia students must be investigated and those responsible prosecuted.

"Students have the right to protest. Violence against them cannot under any circumstance be justified," the human rights body's executive director, Avinash Kumar said in a statement, referring to media reports on police baton charge against the protesting AMU students.

The BJP's Delhi unit filed a complaint with police against Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and other AAP leaders on Monday accusing them of "inciting" Sunday's violence during a protest against the amended citizenship law near Jamia Millia Islamia.

The complaint filed with the Delhi Police Commissioner accused Sisodia, AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan and other party leaders of "hatching criminal conspiracy" and "inciting violence".

After a two-hour 'silent protest' from 4 pm to 6 pm, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hit out at the Modi government over the citizenship law, saying the police crackdown on students of Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday was an attack on the soul of India.

"This country is for everyone, it is for all those students who were beaten up yesterday. Attack on students is an attack on the soul of India," she said, wondering why Prime Minister Narendra Modi is "silent" on assault on women, economy, joblessness and what happened against the students.

The Congress general secretary was joined at the protest by leaders like Ahmed Patel, A K Antony, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Randeep Singh Surjewala, besides hundreds of party workers.

Condemning the alleged police action on students of Jamia Millia Islamia, CPI General Secretary D Raja demanded an investigation into the matter. "Who allowed the police to enter the campus? Who passed the orders? It should be known," he said.

Hitting out the BJP-led government at the Centre, Raja said, "BJP thinks it can rule the country as it likes. BJP should know how to respect democracy, the Constitution, dissent, and the Opposition's view."

Speaking to ETV Bharat on the alleged police excesses in Jamia Millia Islamia, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal said, "Whoever burned down the bus was wrong, and the violence against students was wrong."

Expressing that students have every right to conduct peaceful protests, Sibal said that if the Police indeed stormed inside the campus without permission and lathi-charged the students, that itself was a violation of the law.

"There should be an investigation, as to who gave permission to the police, why did they resort to lathi-charge, and on whose directions this was done," he said.

The senior Congress leader further lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him not to give any "controversial statements".

Several Delhi University students on Monday boycotted exams and held protests to express solidarity with students of Jamia Millia and AMU protesting against the amended Citizenship Act following which heavy force has been deployed at the Arts Faculty. 

Sources said students from the English department of the varsity had written to their professors on Sunday night to postpone exams owing to the situation in Jamia but their request could not be considered since it was late. 

A source said the students were told that since the exams are at the fag end a decision on their postponement was not possible. Also, the varsity can only take a call to postpone exams and not the respective department, the sources said.

At the Delhi University, students alleged that police cracked down on peacefully protesting students who boycotted exams.

Students of political science department boycotted exams in solidarity with Jamia students.          

"I am the only one who has been detained at Maurice Nagar Police Station. There was a group of 60-70 students who were protesting outside the Arts Faculty against police action on Jamia students," Abhigyan, a student of Ramjas College claimed.

Plea moved in HC against police action on Jamia students

A plea was moved in the Delhi High Court on Monday against the police action on students at the Jamia Millia Islamia University on Sunday night.

A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar declined to list the plea for urgent hearing, saying there was "no urgency in the matter".

The plea sought judicial inquiry into the action taken by the police, including allegedly firing at the students.

It also seeks proper medical treatment and compensation for the injured students.

Protestors torched two police vehicles as they clashed with police in New Friends' Colony near Jamia University during a demonstration against the amended Citizenship Act, leaving six cops and two firemen injured, officials said.

The trouble started during a protest by students of Jamia Millia Islamia. But a students' body later said they had nothing to do with the violence and arson and alleged that "certain elements" had joined in and "disrupted" the demonstration.

Soon after the violence, Jamia Millia Islamia Chief Proctor Waseem Ahmed Khan claimed that the Delhi Police entered the campus forcibly without any permission and beat up staff members and students who were then forced to leave the campus.

Condemning the police action, university Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar said students who were inside the library have been taken out and are safe.

Senior advocate Indira Jaising mentioned Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University incidents in Supreme Court on Monday before a bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde. 

Jaising asked the court to take suo motu cognizance of the issue saying: 'It's a very serious human rights violation all over the country.'

Meanwhile, Chief Justice of India SA Bobde said: 'We will determine the rights but not in the atmosphere of riots, let all of this stop and then we will take suo motu cognizance. We are not against rights and peaceful demonstrations. Just because they happen to be students, it doesn't mean they can take law and order in their hands, this has to be decided when things cool down. This is not the frame of mind when we can decide anything. Let the rioting stop.'

Chief Justice Bobde also maintained that the hearing will not consider the videos of the incidents which provokes violence and shows the destruction of public properties. 

During the hearing, senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves appealed that a retired Supreme Court judge should inquire into the Jamia matter.

Supreme Court has listed the matter for hearing on Tuesday.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has appealed to the Centre to repeal the amended Citizenship Act while urging the Union Home Minister and the Delhi Chief Minister to do all it takes to bring the situation under control.

Singh on Thursday had said the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was a direct assault on India's secular character and Parliament had "no authority" to pass a law that "defiled" the Constitution and violated its basic principles.

Any legislation that seeks to "divide the people of the country on religious lines is illegal and unethical, and could not be allowed to sustain," he had also said in a statement.

Veteran India pacer Irfan Pathan has expressed concern about the students of the Jamia Millia Islamia after several of them were injured during violent protests against the amended Citizenship Act.

The 35-year-old pacer, who has played 29 Tests and 120 ODIs for India, posted a tweet to offer support to the students after police entered the Jamia university campus on Sunday.

"Political blame game will go on forever but I and our country is concerned about the students of #JamiaMilia #JamiaProtest," Pathan tweeted.

Protestors torched four public buses and two police vehicles in New Friends' Colony near the university during a demonstration against the act, leaving nearly 60 people including students, cops and fire-fighters injured.

A Jamia students' body claimed they had nothing to do with the arson and "certain elements" had joined the protest and "disrupted" it. They also accused the police of high-handedness.

The university had turned into a battlefield on Sunday as police entered the campus following protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, which led to violence and arson.

Several states in the northeast and West Bengal have been rocked by violent protests over the Act, which seeks to provide citizenship to non-muslim religious minorities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Delhi traffic Advisory: Avoid Ashram, take DND route

As a precautionary measure following Sunday's protests, Delhi Traffic Police has closed traffic movement from Sarita Vihar to Kalindi Kunj, road number. 13A on Monday. 

Traffic restrictions continued on Monday in some parts of Delhi, a day after the national capital witnessed massive violence against the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act.

Traffic movement was closed from Sarita Vihar to Road No. 13 A of the Kalindi Kunj area of Delhi. "Motorists heading towards Delhi from Noida are requested to take the Mathura Road, Ashram and DND and those coming from Badarpur side take Ashram chowk", read traffic advisory from the Delhi Traffic Police.

It also advised commuters from Noida to take the DND flyway or the Akshardham to reach Noida, in pursuit to avoid Ashram, where more demonstrations are expected on Monday.

Sunday witnessed a massive police-students clash in Delhi after residents and commuters in the heart of the national capital ran for their lives as a raging mob of almost 1,000 people protested against the Citizenship Act on Sunday.

MS Randhawa, PRO Delhi Police told ETV Bharat that the situation was an extraordinary one while referring to the violence that erupted during the anti-citizenship act protest near Jamia Milia University.

"Our police personnel had to face heavy stone pelting as they reached the road leading to Jamia Milia Islamia, both from within the campus and outside, as certain anti-social elements had entered the University. To bring the situation under control we had to use tear gas shells," said Randhawa.

On the viral video showing Delhi Police personnel pouring petrol on buses to set them ablaze, Randhawa said, "I would request everyone to watch the video carefully. No police personnel is trying to set vehicles on fire, in fact, they were trying to douse the fire.

Scores of people gathered outside the old Delhi Police Headquarters to protest the force's handling of the situation after an agitation against the new citizenship law near Jamia university on Sunday turned violent.

The protesters raised anti-police slogans outside the headquarters in ITO area, after a call for it was given by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union. Other students' bodies endorsed the protest call.

Earlier Sunday, protestors torched several vehicles near Jamia university and clashed with police. Later, police entered Jamia Millia Islamia to control the situation and said they detained some of the people who allegedly indulged in violence.

Jamia proctor accuses police of forceful entry on campus

Even as Delhi police continued their efforts to control the situation in the wake of anti-CAA violence in Delhi on Sunday, the chief proctor of Jamia Millia Islamia has accused the Delhi police of forcefully entering the university campus and beating up the students.

Waseem Ahmed Khan said on Sunday evening that police had entered the campus despite not being given permission to enter. He alleged that staff and students are being beaten and are even forced to vacate the campus.

"We were stuck in traffic for a long time, and we reached close to Mata Mandir Road, a group of protesters blocked the path and started vandalising the vehicles on the road by pelting stones."

The Jamia Teachers' Association today condemned the violence against the amended Citizenship Act and said it was not part of the arson in south Delhi. 
 
It also appealed to students to stay away from such "direction-less" protest led by local political leaders. 
         
"Jamia practices and preaches peace. JTA condemns all sort of violence near Jamia or anywhere in India," it said in a statement.

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind on Monday condemned the Delhi Police's "brutality" against the Jamia Millia Islamia University students and said its actions were "cruel and oppressive".

The Muslim body's president Maulana Arshad Madani, in a statement, said it was against any form of violence.

"What the Delhi Police, under the name of maintaining law and order, did with the students who were inside the campus, is cruel and oppressive, and we strongly condemn it," he said.

"But question is that why did violence occur during the protests and who is behind it? It should be investigated freely and fairly," he added.

Amnesty slams police action against Jamia students

The Amnesty International India on Monday slammed the police for its "violent" action against students at Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) protesting against the amended citizenship act.

It said the allegations that the police brutally beat up and sexually harassed Jamia students must be investigated and those responsible prosecuted.

"Students have the right to protest. Violence against them cannot under any circumstance be justified," the human rights body's executive director, Avinash Kumar said in a statement, referring to media reports on police baton charge against the protesting AMU students.

Several Delhi University students on Monday boycotted exams and held protests to express solidarity with students of Jamia Millia and AMU protesting against the amended Citizenship Act following which heavy force has been deployed at the Arts Faculty. 

Sources said students from the English department of the varsity had written to their professors on Sunday night to postpone exams owing to the situation in Jamia but their request could not be considered since it was late. 

A source said the students were told that since the exams are at the fag end a decision on their postponement was not possible. Also, the varsity can only take a call to postpone exams and not the respective department, the sources said.

At the Delhi University, students alleged that police cracked down on peacefully protesting students who boycotted exams.

Students of political science department boycotted exams in solidarity with Jamia students.          

"I am the only one who has been detained at Maurice Nagar Police Station. There was a group of 60-70 students who were protesting outside the Arts Faculty against police action on Jamia students," Abhigyan, a student of Ramjas College claimed.

Plea moved in HC against police action on Jamia students

A plea was moved in the Delhi High Court on Monday against the police action on students at the Jamia Millia Islamia University on Sunday night.

A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar declined to list the plea for urgent hearing, saying there was "no urgency in the matter".

The plea sought judicial inquiry into the action taken by the police, including allegedly firing at the students.

It also seeks proper medical treatment and compensation for the injured students.

Protestors torched two police vehicles as they clashed with police in New Friends' Colony near Jamia University during a demonstration against the amended Citizenship Act, leaving six cops and two firemen injured, officials said.

The trouble started during a protest by students of Jamia Millia Islamia. But a students' body later said they had nothing to do with the violence and arson and alleged that "certain elements" had joined in and "disrupted" the demonstration.

Soon after the violence, Jamia Millia Islamia Chief Proctor Waseem Ahmed Khan claimed that the Delhi Police entered the campus forcibly without any permission and beat up staff members and students who were then forced to leave the campus.

Condemning the police action, university Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar said students who were inside the library have been taken out and are safe.

Senior advocate Indira Jaising mentioned Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University incidents in Supreme Court on Monday before a bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde. 

Jaising asked the court to take suo motu cognizance of the issue saying: 'It's a very serious human rights violation all over the country.'

Meanwhile, Chief Justice of India SA Bobde said: 'We will determine the rights but not in the atmosphere of riots, let all of this stop and then we will take suo motu cognizance. We are not against rights and peaceful demonstrations. Just because they happen to be students, it doesn't mean they can take law and order in their hands, this has to be decided when things cool down. This is not the frame of mind when we can decide anything. Let the rioting stop.'

Chief Justice Bobde also maintained that the hearing will not consider the videos of the incidents which provokes violence and shows the destruction of public properties. 

During the hearing, senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves appealed that a retired Supreme Court judge should inquire into the Jamia matter.

Supreme Court has listed the matter for hearing on Tuesday.

He also appealed to the Narendra Modi government "to repeal the controversial Act immediately".

Singh on Thursday had said the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was a direct assault on India's secular character and Parliament had "no authority" to pass a law that "defiled" the Constitution and violated its basic principles.

Any legislation that seeks to "divide the people of the country on religious lines is illegal and unethical, and could not be allowed to sustain," he had also said in a statement.

Two cases have been registered in connection with violence at Jamia Millia Islamia and adjoining areas on Sunday following protests against the amended Citizenship Act, according to Delhi Police.


The university had turned into a battlefield on Sunday as police entered the campus and also used force, following protest against the Act.

"One case has been registered at Jamia Nagar Police Station and another case registered at New Friends Colony Police Station," a senior police official said.

Veteran India pacer Irfan Pathan has expressed concern about the students of the Jamia Millia Islamia after several of them were injured during violent protests against the amended Citizenship Act.

The 35-year-old pacer, who has played 29 Tests and 120 ODIs for India, posted a tweet to offer support to the students after police entered the Jamia university campus on Sunday.

"Political blame game will go on forever but I and our country is concerned about the students of #JamiaMilia #JamiaProtest," Pathan tweeted.

Protestors torched four public buses and two police vehicles in New Friends' Colony near the university during a demonstration against the act, leaving nearly 60 people including students, cops and fire-fighters injured.

A Jamia students' body claimed they had nothing to do with the arson and "certain elements" had joined the protest and "disrupted" it. They also accused the police of high-handedness.

The university had turned into a battlefield on Sunday as police entered the campus following protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, which led to violence and arson.

Several states in the northeast and West Bengal have been rocked by violent protests over the Act, which seeks to provide citizenship to non-muslim religious minorities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Delhi traffic Advisory: Avoid Ashram, take DND route

As a precautionary measure following Sunday's protests, Delhi Traffic Police has closed traffic movement from Sarita Vihar to Kalindi Kunj, road number. 13A on Monday. 

Traffic restrictions continued on Monday in some parts of Delhi, a day after the national capital witnessed massive violence against the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act.

Traffic movement was closed from Sarita Vihar to Road No. 13 A of the Kalindi Kunj area of Delhi. "Motorists heading towards Delhi from Noida are requested to take the Mathura Road, Ashram and DND and those coming from Badarpur side take Ashram chowk", read traffic advisory from the Delhi Traffic Police.

It also advised commuters from Noida to take the DND flyway or the Akshardham to reach Noida, in pursuit to avoid Ashram, where more demonstrations are expected on Monday.

Even as Delhi police continued their efforts to control the situation in the wake of anti-CAA violence in Delhi on Sunday, the chief proctor of Jamia Millia Islamia has accused the Delhi police of forcefully entering the university campus and beating up the students.

Waseem Ahmed Khan said on Sunday evening that police had entered the campus despite not being given permission to enter. He alleged that staff and students are being beaten and are even forced to vacate the campus.
