BJP Demands Re-Polling in 297 booths in West Bengal

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation approached the Election Commission and urged the poll body to ensure deployment of central forces in all polling booths for free and fair elections. Cooch Behar's BJP candidate Nishit Pramanik had held a protest in front of the District Magistrate's office on Thursday evening, demanding a re-poll in all the booths where central forces were not deployed.

New Delhi: A BJP delegation on Friday approached the Election Commission (EC) demanding re-polling in 297 booths in West Bengal's Cooch Behar Lok Sabha constituency that voted on Thursday in the first phase of polling.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation also urged the poll body to ensure deployment of central forces in all polling booths for free and fair elections.

The delegation, comprising Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and its media head Anil Baluni, submitted to the EC a memorandum, accusing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of rigging during the first phase of polling.

"TMC goons prevented people from voting in West Bengal on Thursday. We demanded re-polling and stationing of two CAPF soldiers in every booth in the state," Naqvi told reporters.

Hitting out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he said: "There were instances of rigging and booth capture... 'goondagardi' (hooliganism) was done by TMC's 'goondas' during the first phase of polling."

Intro:BJP has demanded for re-polling on atleast 297 polling booths in Kooch Behar and Alipore parliamentary constituencies of West Bengal which went on polls in the first phase of ongoing general elections.
A delegation of BJP leaders today met the election commision and complained of booth capturing by TMC members where central forces were not deployed.
"We have requested to the election commission that atleast two police personnel from the central armed forces should be deployed on each polling booth for a free and fair election to be conducted in West Bengal" said Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi after meeting the EC.
According to BJP leaders , TMC members allegedly stopped a large number of women from voting and captured hundreds of booth while local police only acted as a mute spectator.
The cases of Violence and clashes in politics of West Bengal has been very common and other parties like Congress and Left too demanded for a re-poll after the voting on two seats was completed in Thursday.



Body:"There is a sense of fear among voters in West Bengal. On the polling day when voters went to caste their votes, the local police or the TMC members forced them away from the polling booths. We have requested to the election commission to conduct repoll on such constituencies and also demanded for deployment of central forces on every booth in West Bengal otherwise a peaceful election is not possible" said Nirmala Sitharaman.
A total of 83 companies of Central forces were deployed in West Bengal in the first phase of elections in two parliamentary constituencies.
Out of the 3800 polling booths where voting took place on Thursday there were 1100 such booths where central forces were not deployed.
The BJP has now demanded for deployment of atleast 2 personnel from central forces on each booth where voting will take place in the remaining six phases.
