EXCLUSIVE: Sad, govt never recognised my father's contribution: Dhyan Chand's son

Major Dhyanchand's son Ashok Dhyan Chand, who is also an international hockey spoke exclusively to ETV Bharat on various topics. He is saddened by the fact that his father who bagged three Olympic gold medals, could not ever get the Bharat Ratna.

Raipur: Major Dhyan Chand, hockey lovers cannot forget this name who bagged three Olympic gold medals. But, unfortunately, his name has been rejected from the nominations for Bharat Ratna.

Major Dhyanchand's son Ashok Dhyan Chand, who is also an international hockey player reached Raipur and spoke exclusively to ETV Bharat on various topics.

Ashok had played his first match in Raipur, so he has a special connection with Raipur.

Ashok, who is currently the coach of Rajasthan's hockey team has stated that the country should open a hockey academy to encourage the youngsters to be a part of it. The government should also make arrangements for a hockey stadium too.

He claimed that his father has played a major role to introduce Indian hockey to the whole world. Indian Olympics has recognized him as 'player of the centenary'. His team had won gold medal three times and has scored more than 1000 goals in his entire sports life. "But, it is unfortunate and sad that government always rejected his name whenever it was recommended for Bharat Ratna," Ashok added.

In 1956, Major Dhyan Chand was awarded Padma Bhushan. He is also an awardee of Arjun and Dronacharya awards.
