Court rejects parole plea of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has rejected the parole plea applied by the wife of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, citing deteriorating health condition of Singh's mother.

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC) on Tuesday rejected the parole plea of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is lodged in Rohtak jail for raping two of his followers.

The petition in this regard was filed by Ram Rahim's wife Harjit Kaur earlier this month for his mother's illness.

Earlier in June, Ram Rahim had applied for parole to conduct farming in his fields in Haryana's Sirsa.

He, however, later withdrew his application.

Ram Rahim is currently lodged at Sunaria jail in Rohtak after being convicted in two rape cases and the murder of a journalist.

He was sentenced in August 2017 to 20 years imprisonment for raping two of his women followers.

On the other hand, a special CBI court at Panchkula in Haryana convicted Ram Rahim for the killing of a journalist named Ramchander Chhatrapati in January this year.

Chhatrapati in his newspaper ''Poora Sach'' published an anonymous letter written by a female Dera follower who exposed how Ram Rahim was sexually exploiting women.

A case was registered against Ram Rahim and three others who are Kuldeep Singh, Nirmal Singh and Krishan Lal in 2003 and handed over to the CBI in 2006.

Ram Rahim was named the main conspirator in the case.

Following Ram Rahim's arrest, violence had been taken place across the city of Panchkula in which Thirty people were killed and 250 got injured, said officials.

Later, the army was deployed in Sirsa but still, clashes had been raised between police and the followers of Dera Sacha Sauda which led to the massive loss of public property.

Meanwhile, the court has rejected second time the self-declared godman Ram Rahim's parole plea in the same year.
