Bastar (Chhattisgarh): As many as 127 Naxalites including 58 hardcore Maoists of Chhattisgarh, who had surrendered in different strife-torn districts of the conflict zone, recently passed out along with others as constables and they have joined the mainstream.

Under the rehabilitation scheme of the Chhattisgarh government, these Maoists had surrendered before police and acquired training become part of the police force.

127 Maoists cadres, who had surrendered in different strife-torn districts of the conflict zone, passed out along with others as constables at Jagadalpur police training school in Chhattisgarh's Bastar district.

The newly recruited personnel, who took oath during the parade ceremony, revealed that they were "disillusioned with the anti-development and anti-tribal ideology of the Maoists".

"The Bastar Police in its endeavour to win the popular backing of the tribal villagers are securing the confidence of the Maoist cadres who are willing to join the mainstream. The trained constables will now be part of our mission for establishing peace in the region," said Dr Abhishek Pallav, SP, Dantewada.

"Out of the surrendering Naxalites, about 127 Naxalites were kept in Bodhghat PTS for the last 2 years and given 11 months of rigorous training. In addition to the legal information and human rights training were given to them. Along with all such training, Naxalites have now become police personnel," Pallav said.

As per the Dantewada police, there are several villages in the district with each having over 5 hardcore Naxals.

"We are first targeting these villages. From the high-focused rural hamlets for which the data would initially be released, we will then move to those places inhabited by the lesser number of Maoists carrying rewards on their head", Pallava said.

"The Loan Varatu programme will bring in the transparency in the anti-Maoist operations. Many jawans have also been promoted for their outstanding work in which they have even been made inspectors. More than 250 Naxalites have surrendered in the last 6 months under the Lone Varratu campaign and they also include young villagers and those who want to join the police will also be trained in the coming days and the better performing surrender Naxalites will be fielded as part of the anti-Naxalite campaign," the SP averred.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, a surrendered Naxal, Sanjay Potam said, "I Surrendered to the police in 2013. Fed up with Naxalite harassment and seeing the villagers being tortured by Naxalites, I made up my mind to join the mainstream and after which I got a job in police and got a house from the government."

"I am happy to be with my family now. Earlier, I was the area commander in my village and now after success in the ongoing operation against the Naxalites, the police administration has promoted me to inspector post," he said.
