Bihar floods: Life turns upside down for Gopalganj residents

Continuous water discharge from Nepal has led to the worsening of the flood situation in the villages of Bihar's Gopalganj. Stranded locals are forced to stay in their inundated villages without food, medicines or drinking water.

Gopalganj (Bihar): Due to incessant rainfall in the Terai regions of Nepal, people of Nimuiya Panchayat in Manjha block have been suffering from flood-led situation across the area since past one week as the excessive water of Gandak river has been released from Valmiki Nagar barrage.

They have been caged inside their villages in Diyara area due to the continuous rise in the floodwater level without food, medicines or drinking water.

The people are forced to settle on the temporary bamboo scaffolds as no public representatives or officials of administration have turned up to help them out following which people are deprived of basic facilities including proper sanitisation, boat, tarpaulin and temporary shelters.

Like each year, Gopalganj is hard-hit by floods as the Gandak river is flowing above the mark of danger-level creating chaos among people.

Even after district administration arranged boats for the flood-hit people of the region, the villagers are unable to connect with them.

People of Mashan police station, Maksoodpur Jagiri Tola, Malahi Tola and Rampur village of Sadar block have started migrating to other villages as the water level on the roads have reached up to 4 feet. Nearly 40,000 people of 60 villages have been affected by these havoc situations.

Several villages of Diyara have been water-logged including Kala Matihaniya of Kuchaykot Block, Roop Sagar Salempur, Jamunia, Pathra of Gamharia Sadar Block, Baraipatti, Jagri Tola, Khap, Maqsoodpur, Ramnagar Masan Police Station, Majha Block's Pathra, Gausia, Dhamapakad Purana, Bhaisahi, Nimuia Baria Block, Salempur, Sikaria, Sidhavalia block, Amari, Banjaria Amarpura Baikunthpur block, Sitalpur, Adampur, Matiyari, Pyarepur, Ashakheda Mohammadpur.

People have alleged laxity in administration as many are unable to get basic medical facilities and they are forced to carry patients on a cot to visit hospitals and health centres through water-logged roads.
