Cash haul in Bihar as state prepares for elections

With the police carrying out routine vehicle checks ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, Rs 74 lakh in cash was seized from a UP-registered luxury car in Patna, reportedly belonging to a political leader. The flag and banner of a political party were also found in the car.

Patna (Bihar): Ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, police seized around Rs 74 lakhs in cash from a car belonging to a political leader in Patna on Thursday.

According to reports, the police seized the cash from a luxury car near the BISCOMAUN Bhawan. The flag and banner of a political party also were reportedly found in the car.

Further investigation into the cash seizure is underway

"With the Model Code of Conduct enforced, we have been carrying out vehicle checking. A large amount of cash was seized and further investigation is underway," City SP Vinay Tiwari said.

According to reporters, two persons, including the driver, have been taken into custody for questioning.

During questioning, the driver Raju reportedly revealed that he had come to Patna in the morning from Sasaram with his boss Sanjay Kumar Singh, who got down on the way. His boss asked him to park the car inside the BISCOMAUN campus for two hours, the driver said.

According to reports, Singh hails from a business family, and his father owns a hotel in Sasaram. Singh is a resident of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, and even the car was registered there.

Reports suggest that the seized cash might have been brought to Patna for acquiring an election ticket from a party. Singh was reportedly in line to get an election ticket from Sasaram.

Meanwhile, the police and Income-Tax department are carrying out further investigation into the cash seizure.
