New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to the Centre and Assam government on a petition opposing the delimitation exercise in Assam.
A Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde was hearing the plea filed by All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). Issuing notices to the Centre and state government, the bench asked the Centre to file its response in the plea.
Pertinently, this is not the first plea opposing the delimitation exercise in Assam.
Earlier in May, the apex court had sought responses from the Centre and the Assam government on a similar plea seeking that delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies in the state be deferred until the completion of Census 2021.
A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde agreed to hear the plea seeking quashing of this year's February 28 order which "rescinded" an earlier notification of February 8, 2008 that had deferred the process of delimitation for Assam.
