New Delhi: Against the backdrop of a devastating flood in Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday has assured a delegation of BJP MPs from Assam that central government will provide all possible assistance to the flood-hit state.
The assurance to BJP MPs from Assam came when they called on the Prime Minister to apprise him about the flood situation in the state and urged him to provide financial assistance to tide over the crisis.
The delegation also submitted a memorandum to PM Modi urging him to announce a special package to mitigate the floods, which every year damage roads, houses and crops.
Speaking to ETV Bharat, BJP MP Dilip Saikia said, "The Prime Minister has assured us that he will provide all possible help at this situation when Assam is reeling under flood."
Saikia refuting allegation levelled by Congress that the amount released by Centre under SDRF is an overdue amount said, "The government has already released the SDRF fund. Amount of Rs 251 crores was released on time the government. He assured us to provide assistance to rehabilitate people."
"We have demanded to enlist this as the national calamity," Saikia stated.
As many as 37 people have lost their lives so far due to the floods and two landslide incidents in the state, Assam's State Disaster Management Authority had said on Thursday.
As on July 18, a total of 4,128 villages in 103 revenue circles of 28 districts have been affected due to floods. Approximately 53,52,107 people have been affected in the state, the disaster management body had said.
