Man commits suicide as wife's name didn't appear in the rough NRC draft last year. Locals allege that he was depressed for quite some time over the issue and finally resorted to ending his life.

Guwahati: As the state is gearing up for the publication of the final draft of NRC, a man from Assam's Karimganj committed suicide as his wife's name did not appear in the rough draft of the NRC published in July last year.

The deceased, identified as Priti Bhushan Dutta of Karimganj's Ratabari's Sonairpar village hanged himself at his house after being depressed for several days over the consequences of NRC publication, a nearby resident said.

Police reached the spot soon after they received the information.

An investigation into the matter is underway.

37 lakh people suffering from mental torture over NRC

A survey conducted by human rights body National Campaign Against Torture (NCTA), days before the publication of the final version of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, revealed that around 37 lakh or 89 percent of over 41 lakh people excluded from the draft NRC have been suffering from extreme mental torture due to the fear of being marked as foreigners.

In this regard, NCTA, a conglomerate of various rights group, released a report titled "Assam's NRC: Four Million Tales of Mental Torture, Trauma, and Humiliation."

Presently there are 100 FTs in Assam. "More 200 FTs will be set up in Assam in October," he added.

The final list of NRC is to be published on August 31.

He was depressed from a few days as his wife Namita Dutta's name had not appeared in the NRC rough draft last published. Police have arrived at his residence and is investigating into the matter.
