Guwahati: Jailed MLA and prominent RTI Activist Akhil Gogoi is likely to be released soon. The NIA court on Thursday discharged Gogoi from all charges framed against him due to lack of evidence. Along with Gogoi, the court has also discharged three of his colleagues including Dharya Konwar, Bitu Sonowal and Manas Konwar.
Gogoi was arrested by Assam Police in December 2019 for his alleged involvement in the violent protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Later the Assam police handed over the investigation to the National Investigating Agency.
Gogoi was sent to judicial custody and later shifted to a cell in the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati due to his ill health.

During the last assembly elections, Gogoi contested from the Sivsagar constituency as a candidate of Raijor Dal and won the election with a record margin. Gogoi had won the election without holding a single public meeting as he was in judicial custody.
