Indo-Bhutan border: Huge cache of arms and ammunition recovered in Chirang

A huge cache of arms and ammunition has been recovered from along the Indo-Bhutan border in Chirang district of Assam. This comes days ahead of the proposed elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council. The cache includes 7 pistols, 3 revolvers, 192 grenades, 200 rounds of live ammunition of AK series rifle, 85 SLR magazines, and 14 RPGs.

Chirang (Assam): Ahead of the proposed elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), a joint team of Indian Army and Assam police on Monday seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from along the Indo-Bhutan border in Chirang district of the state.

Chirang District Superintendent of Police Sudhakar Singh on Monday said this while adding that they have received a tip-off in this regard.

The cache of arms and ammunition included 7 pistols, 3 revolvers, 192 grenades, 200 rounds of live ammunition of AK series rifle, 85 SLR magazines, 14 RPGs among others.

Following the tip-off, the joint team have been carrying a search operation along the Indo-Bhutan border for more than last 12 days. Police said that the arms and ammunition were buried underground and that it was detected using deep search metal detector of the Army.

The elections to the BTC, a territorial council under the Sixth Schedule of Indian Constitution that runs the administration in four districts of the Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts, were scheduled on April 4 this year. The proposed election was, however, deferred due to outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.
