Barpeta (Assam): Gujarat Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani made an appearance in a local court in Barpeta district, Assam on Monday regarding a case involving the alleged assault of a woman police official while he was in custody. Mevani, who arrived in Assam on Sunday night, presented himself before the chief judicial magistrate in Barpeta.

According to officials, Mevani had previously failed to attend the court session on May 29. The next hearing has been scheduled for August 5, and further details about the recent proceedings are yet to be disclosed. Speaking to reporters outside the court, Mevani expressed his hopes for justice on International Justice Day.

The case stems from an incident in April of the previous year when a woman police officer, along with other senior officers, was purportedly assaulted while escorting Mevani from the Guwahati airport to Kokrajhar. At that time, Mevani, who was an Independent MLA supported by the Congress party, was initially arrested on April 19 in Palanpur, Gujarat due to a tweet criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was subsequently transported to Kokrajhar, where a case was registered against him.

Following his release on bail for the tweet-related case, Mevani was arrested on April 25 in connection with the alleged assault, with the Barpeta court granting him bail on April 29.

The developments surrounding Jignesh Mevani's court appearance have attracted significant attention, given his political affiliation and the nature of the charges against him. The next hearing on August 5 will provide an opportunity for further examination of the matter, shedding light on the progress made in the legal proceedings against the Gujarat Congress MLA.
