Crackdown on Amritpal carried out to gain political mileage, alleges SGPC

The crackdown on pro-Khalistani leader Amritpal and other members of the Waris Punjab De outfit was carried out to gain political mileage before the upcoming bypolls in Punjab, alleged Bhagwant Singh Sialka, an advocate and a member of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

Dibrugarh (Assam): A team of 10 people, including pro-Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh's father, arrived at Dibrugarh Jail on Thursday. Two members of the Shiromani Gurudwara Management Committee (SGPC) and eight family members of the Amritpal arrived at the jail. According to sources, they were thoroughly examined before entering the jail. They have been prevented from bringing anything to the jail premises. Security arrangements have also been tightened in and outside the Dibrugarh Jail.

The crackdown on Amritpal and his other members of the Waris Punjab De outfit was carried out to gain political mileage before the upcoming by-polls in Punjab, alleged an advocate and a member of SGPC, Bhagwant Singh Sialka. Speaking to the media, Sialka said, "We had come here with the family members of the detainees and after meeting them we will return to Punjab by Friday evening."

Advocate Simranjit Singh, representing detained Khalistani sympathiser Daljit Singh Kalsi said, "We challenged the National Security Act (NSA) in the Chandigarh High Court. The Act was being used against Sikhs in Punjab and later it was excised in northeastern states and Jammu and Kashmir."

"After the arrest of our clients, they have shifted out of jurisdiction. The Supreme Court has given strict guidelines on human rights violation", he said." He further stated, "In NSA, the SP has to submit a report to the District Magistrate (DM) about allegations levelled against a person and the DM has to verify whether the allegations are true or not. However, in this case, the District Magistrate (DM) has given his approval to the State government immediately."
