CM Sarbananda Sonowal orders arrest of Garga Chatterjee as protest erupt across Bengal and Assam

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered the arrest of Kolkata-based political commentator, Garga Chatterjee for his outrageous remark on Chaolung Sukapha.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered an immediate arrest of political commentator Garga Chatterjee as protests erupted across Assam and West Bengal for his detestable remark on Ahom kingdom founder Chaolung Sukapha.

Garga Chatterjee had reportedly described Chaolung Sukapha as a "Chinese Invader" and had questioned the existence of Assam Day. This led to an outrage in several districts of Assam, people across the state staged a protest. Following which his arrest order was issued.

However, Garga's supporter on Friday burned an effigy of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for his intolerance and arrest order.

Sukapha was a 13th-century ruler who founded the Ahom kingdom that ruled Assam for six centuries. He is widely referred to as the architect of "Bor Asom" or "Greater Assam". To commemorate Sukapha and his rule, Assam celebrates "Asom Divas" on December 2.

According to the reports, Chatterjee had also been one of the main persons behind the 'Chalo Paltai' movement which had allegedly instigated the linguistic minority people against the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in 2019.
