Assam Cabinet approves awards to honour citizens

A cabinet meeting under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday instituted four awards in the lines of the Central government's Padma awards to honour prominent citizens and recognize their contributions towards society.

Guwahati: A cabinet meeting under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday instituted four awards in the lines of the Central government's Padma awards to honour prominent citizens and recognize their contributions towards society.

The four awards are Asom Ratna, Asom Shree, Asom Bhushan, and Asom Bibhushan. The Asom Ratna Award will be presented every year to one person who has made a significant contribution to society. Asom Bibhushan Award will be presented to 3 persons, Assam Bhushan to 5 persons, and Asom Shree to 10 persons every year. The awards will carry Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh respectively with other benefits like free medical treatment of critical illness, free stay at Assam Bhawans, free travel in ASTC buses, etc.

In a major administrative reform, the Assam Cabinet on Tuesday also approved simplification of flood damage assessment and repairing of infrastructure. The District Collectors are now authorized to take necessary action in this regard within the time frame of April 1 to October 31 each year. The Cabinet also recommended holding of 1st Budget Session of the present Assam Legislative Assembly from July 12.

The Assam Cabinet has also resolved to display photographs of the country's President, Prime Minister, and first Chief Minister of Assam, Late Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi in all government offices. In yet another reformative decision, the Cabinet also decided to check the weights of trucks at Digharkhal and Srirampur inter-state border gates. The decision aims at eliminating overloading by coal trucks passing through Assam.
