NDA retains power with comfortable majority, BJP wins 60 seats, Congress 29

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance secured a comfortable majority in Assam Assembly elections paving its way to form the government in the state winning 75 seats of the total 126 constituencies.  

As per the Election Commission, the BJP secured 60 seats, about 33.2 per cent of the total vote share, while allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People's Party, Liberal (UPPL) bagged nine and six seats respectively.  

Congress managed to secure 29 seats (29.7 per cent vote share) while its 'Mahajoth' allies AIUDF won 16, and Bodoland People's Front bagged four. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) secured one seat. Incumbent Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal won the Majuli constituency while Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma bagged the Jalukbari seat with a margin of over one lakh votes.

The ruling BJP-led NDA is heading to retain power in Assam for the second time in a row as the alliance is leading in 68 seats in the 126-member assembly for which three-phase polling ended on April 6.

According to the Election Commission's initial trends of the results, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party alone is leading in 51 seats while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in ten seats and United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) is leading in seven seats. The opposition Congress has established initial leads in 21 seats while its partners Bodoland Peoples Front is leading in two seats and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) in nine seats. An independent candidate is leading in one seat.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is leading by over 5000 votes in the Jalukbari constituency. While Sarma got 7000 votes so far, his rival Congress candidate Ramen Chandra Borthakur could poll only 1661 votes.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also the convenor of the BJP led alliance North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) is winning the Jalukbari constituency since 2001.

Unused EVM found at counting centre

An unused EVM was found inside a trunk at the counting centre premises here on Saturday evening, a government release said.

On being found, District Election Officer Megh Nidhi Dahal along with Returning Officers rushed to the spot to enquire about the machine. Contesting candidates too reached the spot.

On investigation, it was found that the unused EVM which had been kept in reserve on polling day, had inadvertently found its way to the counting venue. The release said no votes had been polled on the machine.

It was opened before contesting candidates who were satisfied that there was no misuse. The unused EVM was immediately taken for safe storage to an EVM warehouse adjacent to the Deputy Commissioner's office.

BJP or Congress alliance? Final results today

Guwahati (Assam): After three high-octane phases of polling and election rallies filled with enthusiastic supporters, the results of the Assam Assembly polls will be announced today.

Incumbent Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is seeking a second term after a thumping win in the 2016 elections where the party ended Tarun Gogoi-led Congress' 15-year rule, when it won 86 out of 126 seats. 

This year, the main contest is between the alliances led by the BJP and Congress. The BJP-led led alliance also includes the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People's Party Liberal (UPPL). 

The Congress has stitched a broad alliance called the Mahajath, which includes All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, the Anchalik Gana Marcha (AGM) and the Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF). 

Jailed activist Akhil Gogoi's Raijor Dal has stitched an alliance with Assam Jatiya Parishad. The BJP is banking on the performance of the Sarbanand Sonowal government in the state in the past five years, the initiatives of the central government and the appeal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Over the three phases, the main players, the BJP and Congress-led Mahajot have been made significant efforts to woo voters. Ahead of the third phase, BJP leaders campaigning in the state claimed that they reached the magic number to form the government in the first two phases and with the voting in the last phase they will form the government in Assam with a thumping majority.

Congress Party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have also campaigned in the state. The latter was scheduled to campaign in the state but had to cancel it as her husband Robert Vadra tested positive for Covid-19. 

The Congress has promised five lakh government jobs to youth in five years, 200 units of free electricity, increasing daily wage of tea garden workers to Rs 365 and Rs 2,000 per month to homemakers. Congress has made representations to the poll panel for alleged violation of the model code of conduct by BJP leaders.

The Congress has stitched a broad alliance called the Mahajath, which includes All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, the Anchalik Gana Marcha (AGM) and the Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF). 

Jailed activist Akhil Gogoi's Raijor Dal has stitched an alliance with Assam Jatiya Parishad. The BJP is banking on the performance of the Sarbanand Sonowal government in the state in the past five years, the initiatives of the central government and the appeal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Over the three phases, the main players, the BJP and Congress-led Mahajot have been made significant efforts to woo voters. Ahead of the third phase, BJP leaders campaigning in the state claimed that they reached the magic number to form the government in the first two phases and with the voting in the last phase they will form the government in Assam with a thumping majority.

Congress Party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have also campaigned in the state. The latter was scheduled to campaign in the state but had to cancel it as her husband Robert Vadra tested positive for Covid-19. 

The Congress has promised five lakh government jobs to youth in five years, 200 units of free electricity, increasing daily wage of tea garden workers to Rs 365 and Rs 2,000 per month to homemakers. Congress has made representations to the poll panel for alleged violation of the model code of conduct by BJP leaders.
