Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh): The world economy came to standstill with the coronavirus pandemic. Indian Railways has also been affected by this slowdown, but they have taken several innovative initiatives to cope up with the crisis.
The Materials Management Department of Waltair railway division initiated a new way to enhance their earnings during these harsh times of the coronavirus pandemic through the sale of unserviceable materials (scrap) released from various activities of the railways. The division has sold scrap materials in auction worth Rs 7.43 Crore in a single day, which is the best ever figures the East Coast Railway has ever achieved.

The Materials Management Department identified all the scrap lying along the track lines and workshops during the lockdown period. An auction was carried out within 15 days after segregating the scrap. The auctions were 100 percent online, where anybody from any corner of the country could participate. Released materials from tracks such as unserviceable rails were sold in this e-auction.
