Miami Open: Isner beats Edmund, abusive Kyrgios fined

Nick Kyrgios was seen cursing a spectator which forced umpire to impose a point penalty that put him down a double break in the third.

Florida: Defending champion John Isner of USA advanced to the Miami Open quarterfinals with a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) win over 19th seed Kyle Edmund of United Kingdom here at Hard Rock Stadium on Tuesday.

With this win, Isner won nine straight matches at the Miami Open dating back to winning the trophy last year. That victory -the most prestigious of the 14 titles in his career – made him the first American champion of this tournament since Andy Roddick in 2010.

Big-serving Isner hit 17 aces and won 81 per cent of his first-serve points to reach the quarter-finals without dropping a set through three matches.

At one point of the match, however, it seemed the USA star had lost momentum after he failed to serve out the opening set while leading 5-2 and then was forced to recover from a double mini-breakdown in the first tiebreak.

Meanwhile, Australia's Nick Kyrgios was given a point penalty for an audible obscenity during his loss to Borna Coric.
