Tokyo Olympics: Deepak Punia beats Nigeria's Ekerekeme Agiomor, enters quarterfinals

In the first period, Punia started off brilliantly taking an early lead with 2 points. The period ended with a scoreline of 4-1. Punia showed aggression in the second period. 12-1 read the scorecard as he registered an easy victory over his Nigerian counterpart.

Tokyo: Second seed in 86kg, Deepak Punia defeated Nigerian Ekerekeme Agiomor, a former African Champion, here at the Tokyo Olympics.

Punia have gone through a topsy-turvy ride last year and he joins the Olympics in the back of an injury. On the other hand, the Nigerian has won three medals at the African Wrestling Championships. He is only the fifth wrestler from the country to have qualified for Olympics.

He advances to quarterfinals.

Earlier in the day, two time Asian Champion Ravi Dahiya defeated Columbia's Eduardo Tigreros in his round of 16 bout in 57kg category event.

The Indian wrestling campaign didn’t start on the most promising note in Tokyo with Sonam Malik getting knocked out in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
