Hyderabad: Sushil Kumar might have earned a spot in World Championships by defeating Jitender Kumar in 74 kg final on Tuesday but evidently his name was sent to the United World Wrestling (UWW) as a member of the national squad after the very first round of trials in Olympic categories.
It has been learnt that though Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had time limit upto 14th August, it sent the list in the last week of July itself.
The WFI in fact, sent 30 names in each categories (10 each in freestyle, women's wrestling and Greco-Roman) around July 28.
According to rules, all the national federations have to send their respective entries to the UWW at least one month before the scheduled event.
World Championships is set to be held from September 14-22 in Kazakhstan, and thus the federation had time limit upto August 14.
However, The federation can alter already named Wrestlers citing a reason and it can be done atleast 10 days before the occurence of the event.
Although WFI might have done everything within the rules but sending names before the stipulated time period raises a few questionmarks.
The WFI's decision to give another opportunity to Jitender too makes the body's intention disbelieving. The Wrestler can now challenge 79kg winner Virdev Gulia and qualify for the Championships.
If the WFI was sure of Sushil's World participation , Jitender might have competed in 79kg for the trials. Also before Tuesday, there were whispers that Jitender would participate in the 79kg.
Sushil Kumar was selected in the squad before the second trials
