  • Jacqueline Williams of the West Indies became the first woman to officiate as the third umpire in a men’s international as she took the field on Wednesday for the first of three T20Is against the visiting Ireland team. The 43-year-old from Jamaica will officiate in the position in all the three matches of the series that began on January 15. Interestingly, Williams had become the first woman to officiate as third umpire in an ICC men’s tournament in 2016 when she was assigned the Oman versus Nigeria match at the World Cricket League Division Five in Jersey.

  • Former Japan striker Kazuyoshi Miura, who turns 53 next month, has renewed his contract with Yokohama FC for a year to extend his record as the world’s oldest professional footballer. The veteran player, admiringly nicknamed “King Kazu” for his spirited onfield style, will kick off his 35th career season this year, the club announced over the weekend. In 2017, Miura surpassed football’s previous professional longevity record and became the oldest player to score a competitive goal in a professional match. Both records were previously held by English legend Stanley Matthews.

  • Former Kerala footballer Nidhin Lal was arrested by the Vasco police in Goa for running a prostitution parlour in the port town. Lal, a goalkeeper who played for I-League teams like Mumbai FC, Shillong Lajong FC, Minerva Punjab FC and even turned out in the Indian Super League (ISL) for Chennaiyin FC, was nabbed along with his aide Shyni Joseph. A case was filed and registered under the Immoral Traffic Act and under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code. The footballer, along with Joseph, were taken into police custody by the Vasco JMFC, where they will remain for six days.

  • A Class-VI student suffered a life-threatening injury after a javelin pierced his head during the annual sports day event at his school in Howrah’s Shyampur on Monday. Sourajit Bera, the injured student of Nayan Chandra Vidyapith School, was participating in the event when the sharp object hit him on the head. The student was rushed to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata where doctors managed to remove the object in a one-and-a-half-hour surgery. However, the operation left the boy partially paralyzed on the left side of his body.

  • Worries over the health of players at the Australian Open have intensified after bushfire smoke forced one player to retire with breathing problems and another match to be abandoned, with air quality in Melbourne dropping to the worst in the world overnight. Slovenia’s Dalila Jakupovic suffered a coughing fit halfway through her qualifying match against Switzerland’s Stefanie Vögele at Melbourne Park, the venue for the tournament’s first grand slam, which forced her to retire. Earlier, former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard also called several medical time-outs in her opening match against China’s Xiaodi You.

  • Indian wrestler Gurpreet Singh scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a Ranking Series level gold twice in the Greco-Roman category. Last year, Singh had become India’s first Greco-Roman wrestler to win a gold medal in ranking series at Sassari tournament. Singh defeated Burhan Akbudak of Turkey 8-5 to win a close fought match.
