Guwahati: The sports city of Assam will now transform into a mega-sports ground with the starting of 36th National Jr Athletics Championships. The five day long Championships will host various indoor as well as outdoor sporting event. At least 1,637 athletes from all over the country would be participating in various events, which has started from Saturday at Sarusajai Stadium.
Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the mega sports event. “In the past couple of years, we have developed an environment conducive for sports in Assam. The 36th National Junior Athletics Championship 2020-21, organised by Assam Athletics Association, is another step towards realising the dream of making Guwahati the sports capital of our nation," CM said.
The Mega Championships is for athletes under-14, 16, 18 and 20 years of age. Assam would be fielding some 78 athletes in 90 events while Haryana has the largest group with 159 athletes, followed closely by Tamil Nadu with 150. The Championship will conclude on February 10.
