Brighton: Relegation-threatened Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Arsenal 2-1 on Saturday. It came as a big blow to the London club's chances of securing a place in the European championships next season.
Frenchman Neal Maupay's 95th-minute goal after Nicolas Pepe's delightful second-half opener had been cancelled out by Lewis Dunk.
There was a melee after the final whistle when Maupay was confronted by Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi and fell to the floor. Other players joined in and there was some pushing and shoving before Maupay was led away by Sead Kolasinac.
'Some of the Arsenal players need to learn humility,' Maupay said later. 'They got what they deserved.'
The 2-1 victory lifted Brighton five points clear of the relegation zone. They are now placed at 15th spot on 32 points, five points above third-from-bottom Bournemouth, who have one game in hand. Brighton still face a difficult run-in but this smash-and-grab raid has established a gap between them and their fellow strugglers.
The defeat left the Gunners in ninth place on the EPL table with 40 points from 30 games, six behind fifth-placed Manchester United.
The result came three days after Mikel Arteta's side suffered a 3-0 rout at Manchester City as the Premier League returned after a three-month hiatus due to the coronavirus health crisis.
Both Granit Xhaka and Pablo Mari were carried off on stretchers with injuries in the first half and substitute David Luiz gave away a goal, conceded a penalty and was sent off, all in the space of 25 minutes.
