Spain: Barcelona have sacked Ernesto Valverde and replaced him with former Real Betis head coach Quique Setien, who has agreed a contract until June 2022.

Valverde led the club to two successive Spanish La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey during his two-and-a-half years in charge.

Despite Barcelona sitting top of the table alongside fierce rivals Real Madrid, Valverde's side have been poor away from the Camp Nou with defeats to Athletic Bilbao, Granada and Levante plus draws at Osasuna, Real Sociedad and Espanyol.

Last week, they lost in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals to Atletico Madrid.

Former Barcelona player, Xavi Hernandez, had been a possible candidate to take over the defending La Liga champions - however, he reportedly distanced himself from the opportunity after deciding the time was not right.
