Chennai: The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is reportedly set to have Sourav Ganguly's elder brother Snehashish as its new secretary, according to a report in a leading English daily.
The association in its special general meeting in Kolkata on February 5 is also set to elect Avishek Dalmiya as the president who will succeed current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.
As per the report, both Snehashish and Avishek will be elected unopposed. Snehashish will thus succeed Dalmiya in the secretary chair which will mark a rare occasion in Indian cricket administration when a board president’s brother will hold a senior post in a state body at the same time.
if appointed, Ganguly Sr. will not be the only one from the Ganguly family in the CAB. Their uncle Debasish is already the treasurer of the association.
Snehasish Ganguly is a former first-class cricketer, who played 59 matches for Bengal. He has scored 2534 runs at an average of 39.59 in first-class cricket. In List A cricket, however, Snehasish’s returns were modest, at best, as he only managed 275 runs in 18 matches at an average of 18.33.
If the rumours are true and the 54-year-old Snehasish is indeed appointed as secretary of the Bengal state association, that will help bump up the number of former cricketers in administrative roles throughout the country.
Other than Sourav and Snehashish. Mohammad Azharuddin (president of Hyderabad) and Roger Binny (president of Karnataka) as former internationals, Jaydev Shah (president of Saurashtra) played first-class for a long time. Sanjeev Rao (secretary of Madhya Pradesh) and Devajit Saikia (secretary of Assam) also represented their states.
