Reportedly, Shastri has been appointed as the head coach till the 2021 T20 World Cup.

“The head coach will be at the helm of affairs till the 2021 World T20 and after that it will be a process of re-appointment or selection of a new coach as has been the trend in recent years. The support staff will also be handed contracts till the World T20 as continuity is very important considering the big-ticket events that are lined up over the next couple of years,” a BCCI functionary was quoted by media.

Shastri, 57, was one of six applicants interviewed for the job, although as an incumbent coach, his candidature to the recruitment process was given automatic entry. He was pipped to retain his position as the head coach after team India captain Virat Kohli backed Shastri's candidature at the pre-departure media conference before the West Indies tour.

Interestingly, this will be Shastri's fourth stint with the national team, having served briefly as the Cricket Manager (2007 tour of Bangladesh), Team Director (2014-2016) and head coach (2017-2019).

Meanwhile, other applicants shortlisted for the interview included Lalchand Rajput (India team manager at WT20 2007), Robin Singh (former India fielding coach), Tom Moody (Sri Lanka coach at WC 2007), Mike Hesson (New Zealand coach at WC 2015) and Phil Simmons (West Indies coach at WT20 2016).
