Hyderabad: Team India opener Shikhar Dhawan, on Tuesday, was ruled out of the ongoing 2019 ICC World Cup for at least three weeks as the southpaw fractured his left thumb while playing against Australia on Sunday.

  • However, BCCI medical team is currently monitoring Dhawan's injury and the Indian cricket board confirmed that the southpaw will stay with the Indian team and it has not called any replacement.
  • Interestingly, Dhawan's latest tweet also indicates that the 33-year-old batsman is not going to give up so easily and he will race against time to get fit and return to the Indian squad as soon as possible.

Dhawan posted motivational lines from Dr. Rahat Indori's poem, signalling his intentions of making a stronger comeback in the tournament.

"Kabhi mehek ki tarah hum gulon se udte hain... Kabhi dhuyein ki tarah hum parbaton se udte hain... Ye kainchiyaan humein udne se khaak rokengi... Ke hum paron se nahin hoslon se udte hain," Dhawan tweeted.

Given the current situation of Dhawan, the motivational message suggests that the openers journey in the tournament will not be hindered by his thumb injury and nothing can stop him.

  • Meanwhile, young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was, on Wednesday, brought in as cover for the injured Shikhar Dhawan in India's World Cup squad.
  • His arrival will be a day before India's game against New Zealand, but the 21-year-old won't be considered a replacement till the time the team management takes a final call on Dhawan's availability for the rest of the tournament.

Team India meanwhile, will be looking to get past the disappointment of losing Dhawan and start fresh as they face New Zealand in their next game at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Thursday.
