Ekta Kapoor: The self-made woman

There was a time when Ekta Kapoor's daily soaps were a part of every household. Popularly known as Content Queen and Queen of Indian Television, Ekta was honoured with the coveted Padma Shri award on January 26. On the special occasion of Women's Day, let's get a brief on how she not only ruled the television industry but also made an intact place in the film industry and web platforms.

Mumbai: Daughter of yesteryear star Jeetendra, Ekta started her journey from an early age. In an interview, Ekta told that when she was 17 years old, her father said that 'either to get married or work instead of partying'. Jeetendra said that he won't give any extra money besides the pocket money. It was then she started working in an ad agency to earn some money.

Under her banner Balaji Telefilms, she has created 130 daily soaps. Some of her famous TV serials which are still fresh in our minds include Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kahin Kisi Roz, Kasauti Zindagi Ki among others.

She set new trends in the world of television with serials ranging from family drama to mystery thrills. Stars like Sushant Singh Rajput and Vidya Balan came to power after featuring in her serials.

Even today, her shows rule the small screen. Shows like Naagin, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Kumkum Bhagya, Kundali Bhagya lead the list of top TRPs. Since March 2, her new show Pavitra Bhagya has also knocked the small screens.

Not only TV shows, but Ekta has also entertained spectators on the big screen. Ekta had produced a comedy-drama Kyuki Mai Jhoot Nai Bolta with the lead stars of that time Govinda and Sushmita.

Ekta once told that there was a time in her career when her films went flop on the big screen. The back to back flop of her films made her anxious and started leading her towards depression. But the television producer didn't lose hope and continued battling for success.

Many hit films like Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, The Dirty Picture, Judgemental Hai Kya and Dream Girl are among those films which were made by Ekta.

Ekta is a strong believer of astrology and numerology. Ekta's films and shows are an example of her beliefs. Interestingly, you will notice that the name of most of her projects starts with the letter 'K'.

Ekta has now gripped her place tight in the digital platform as well through her web channel Alt Balaji. The web series shown there are high on demand.

Ekta did not marry, but she is the proud mother of a child. In January last year, she became the mother of a son through surrogacy. She has come up with a new web series titled Mentalhood which is based on parenting.

In May 2001, Ekta was featured in Asia Week magazine's list of the 50 most influential women communicators. Besides, Ekta has also found a place in the list of top 25 women entrepreneurs of the country. Ekta has won prestigious awards such as the Indian Television Academy Awards and Forbes Tycoon of Tomorrow.
