Sharechat users can play their videos in WhatsApp soon

Facebook-owned WhatsApp is working on a new feature to allow ShareChat users to play videos within its main app via the picture-in-picture (PIP) mode and on the other side with the ban of TikTok in India; Microsoft is also set to invest about $100 million in the Indian social media app ShareChat.

Delhi: Indian social media app ShareChat has a user base of over 140 million monthly active users spread across the nation and available in 15 languages, including Hindi, Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Odia, Kannada, Assamese, Haryanvi, Rajasthani, Bhojpuri and Urdu.

It is spotted first by WABetaInfo that tracks WhatsApp updates in beta versions, the support for the ShareChat video service is now available in the latest WhatsApp beta for both iOS and Android.

"Latest updates officially support the possibility to play videos shared on ShareChat within WhatsApp," the website said.

ShareChat told that last month their short video sharing platform Moj has crossed five million downloads from Google Play Store in just about a week since the beta version of the TikTok rival was released. The regional language in the social media platform in June fully migrates its infrastructure to Google Cloud in a bid to improve efficiency and to reduce costs and enhance the overall performance of the app

The Bengaluru-based regional language social platform has become so popular that even Twitter came on board when the four-year-old company raised $100 million in its Series D round of funding last year.

Microsoft is reportedly aiming to acquire the global business of the Chinese short-video making app TikTok, including in India where the app is banned and is officially seeking to buy the TikTok operations in North America, Australia and New Zealand for a "reported figure of $50 billion", according to The Financial Times.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump on Thursday signed two executive orders prohibiting transactions in the country with the Chinese companies that own WeChat and TikTok. He said that the country should get a large percentage of the proceeds if part of the short video-sharing platform TikTok's business is bought by an American firm. The discussion between the Microsoft CEO and the US President led to setting a date for closure of the deal around September 15.

ShareChat is an Indian social media platform app developed by Mohalla Tech Pvt Ltd. and founded by Ankush Sachdeva, Bhanu Pratap Singh, and Farid Ahsan on 8 January 2015. In 2019, ShareChat has over 60 million monthly active users across 15 languages of India and the application offers features that include private messaging, tagging, and a personal messaging feature, enabling users to share videos, jokes, songs, and other vernacular based social content with other unknown users.
