Tehran: Iran on Monday warned the U.S. against "starting a fire" following a rocket attack against the U.S embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Eight rockets targeted the embassy on Sunday, injuring an Iraqi security guard.

Baghdad said the attack was carried out by what it described as an "outlawed group".

U.S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has blamed Iran-backed militias for the incident.

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh condemned Pompeo's remarks.

"I also warn the United States regime not to seek starting a fire and waging conflict in these days," Khatibzadeh said.

Khatibzadeh also hit out at Canada for saying it was starting its own probe into the downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane almost a year ago.

The disaster killed all 176 people on board, many of them Canadians.

Iran admitted shooting down the plane, saying it was caused by human error.

Canada is forming its own forensic examination and assessment team to examine evidence and information and has recently questioned Iran's probe into the issue.

Khatibzadeh said Canada was using the grief of the victims for domestic political purposes.
