Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday said it supported Saudi Arabia's decision to limit pilgrimage at the Hajj, saying putting health first is a choice all countries must make during the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking from Geneva, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said questions about how to hold large gatherings of people safely have become increasingly important.
He said the Kingdom made a decision based on risk assessment and analysis of different scenarios following the WHO's guidance.

As the WHO expects 10 million confirmed cases within the next week, Tedros warned that while research for a vaccine must continue, so must therapeutic efforts for those currently suffering from the disease.
Those experiencing severe symptoms of COVID-19 need extra oxygen.
However, Tedros said demand is currently outstripping supply as the WHO reports many countries struggle to obtain oxygen concentrators.
The WHO subsequently announced that with UN partners, oxygen concentrators and other equipment are being supplied for countries that need them most.
