Geneva: The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday warned the European Union (EU) nations that they should remain on guard for the spread of new coronavirus.
Speaking by video link to the European Parliament Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the virus is still circulating, it is still deadly and most people are still susceptible.
Tedros' warning came as many European countries continue to relax lockdown restrictions put in place to tackle the spread of the new virus.
Despite the warning, Tedros gave thanks to the EU for what he called their leadership and support, especially for countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific and urged that the EU was in a unique position to provide global leadership when it comes to worldwide recovery from the new virus.

He also commented on international efforts to develop a vaccine for COVID-19, saying that there should be a political commitment to provide global access to the vaccine, regardless of which country successfully develops one.
