The water parade will continue on Sunday, with the second part, as a procession of masked gondolas, lead by the famous "pantegana" (a giant water rat), the symbol of the Venetian Carnival.

This year's Venice carnival runs from 16 February to March 5, a public party lasting for weeks leading up to the Roman Catholic period of Lent.

"At the recent meeting of - let me just call it the unwilling, and the openly coerced - in Warsaw (Middle East conference) the US Vice President (Mike Pence) and the Secretary of State (Mike Pompeo) both blasted Europe, on European soil, for even attempting, albeit without much success, to abide by its obligations under the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as Iran nuclear deal) and under UN Security Council resolution 2231. Yesterday, right here in Munich, Mr. Pence repeated this farce when he arrogantly demanded that Europe must join the United States in undermining its own security and breaking its obligations."

"Indeed more and more nations are becoming explicit about the fact that the United States is now the single biggest source of destabilisation in our neighbourhood. As we speak, Iraqi lawmakers are demanding the withdrawal of US forces from their land. And after more than eighteen years of failure in Afghanistan, the United States is now negotiating with the Taliban to withdraw American forces from Afghanistan. In contrast, our standing with the people of Iraq and Syria to counter terrorism has put ISIS (Islamic State group) on the verge of extinction."

Mohammad Javad Zarif addressed the Munich Security Conference on Sunday, a day after US Vice President Mike Pence prodded European powers Germany, France and Britain to follow Washington in withdrawing from the deal and to "stop undermining US sanctions".
The US withdrew unilaterally last year from the 2015 agreement, which offers Iran sanctions relief for limiting its nuclear programme.
Zarif said that Pence "arrogantly demanded that Europe must join the United States in undermining its own security and breaking its obligations".
