Trump tones down, praises Modi for HCQ export

After threatening India of retaliation over blocking the export of hydroxychloroquine, Donald Trump praised Narendra Modi over the fresh move on the anti-malarial drugs saying, he is very good, they put a stop because they wanted it for India, but there is a lot of good things coming from that.

Hyderabad: After India decided to lift the partial ban on Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) export during the pandemic, US President Donald Trump has toned down and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his move on the anti-malarial drug.

In a telephonic interview with Fox News, Trump said, “I bought millions of doses. More than 29 million. I spoke to PM Modi, a lot of it comes out of India. I asked him if he would release it? He was Great. He was really good. You know they put a stop because they wanted it for India. But there is a lot of good things coming from that.“

On Monday, Trump hinted at a possible retaliation if India does not lift its hold on the export of Hydroxychloroquine saying, "If he (PM Modi) doesn't allow it to come out, that would be okay, but of course there may be retaliation. Why wouldn't there be?"

India on Wednesday decided to export anti-malarial drug Hydroxychloroquine to several countries including those in the neighbourhood on a case-by-case basis in sync with its commitment to the international community to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

New Delhi had imposed a ban on the export of the drug since the coronavirus outbreak hit India.
