US racial violence

Breonna Taylor topic

Democrat Kamala Harris says she doesn’t believe justice has been done in the case of Breonna Taylor, who was killed in a police drug raid that went bad.

Taylor was shot multiple times in March after being roused from sleep by police at her door. A grand jury did not charge any officers for their role in Taylor’s death.

Addressing criminal justice reform at Wednesday’s vice presidential debate, Harris says a Joe Biden administration would ban chokeholds and require a national registry for police officers who break the law. She says George Floyd would be alive if such a ban existed.

Vice President Mike Pence was also asked if justice was done in the Taylor case. He says Taylor’s family “has our sympathies, but I trust our justice system, a grand jury that reviews the evidence.”

Pence also says there is no excuse for what happened to Floyd, who was killed after police pressed on his neck with a knee for several minutes. He says, 'Justice will be served'.

But he says there is no excuse for the rioting and looting that followed Floyd’s death.

US China trade war

Republican Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic challenger Kamala Harris sparred Wednesday night over the Trump administration's relationship with China as well as the country being the source of the coronavirus.

Harris said Pence's claiming of a trade war victory with China, was incorrect. "You lost that trade war, you lost it."

Harris claimed the trade dispute with China cost 3,00,000 manufacturing jobs, "We are in a manufacturing recession."

Pence responded that Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden never fought a trade war with China and that he was instead "a cheerleader for Communist China over the last several decades."

Harris called the Trump administration’s response to the growing pandemic the greatest failure of any presidential administration in the history of our country.

Pence commended Trump’s decision to shut off travel from China, saying the decision bought invaluable time to coordinate the country’s response to the pandemic. But Trump’s move only cut off some travel from China, and tens of thousands were still allowed to pour into the country.

More than 2,10,000 Americans have died during the pandemic. Trump is recovering at the White House from his infection.

The Democratic vice presidential nominee said Wednesday during a candidate debate in Salt Lake City that "it'd be really good to know who the president of the United States, the commander and chief, owes money to."

Harris referenced reporting by The New York Times showing Trump paid USD 750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017 and is carrying a total of USD 421 million in loans and debt.

Harris also hammered Vice President Mike Pence over health care, saying that the Trump administration is "coming for you" if you have a preexisting condition.

Citing the Trump administration's support for a challenge to the Affordable Care Act before the Supreme Court, Harris says during Wednesday night's vice presidential debate that the Trump administration is "coming for you" if you have a preexisting condition, if you "love someone who has a preexisting condition" or if you are younger than 26 years old and covered by their parents' health care plan.

In response, Pence says that "Obamacare was a disaster" and that he and Trump have a plan to cover people with preexisting conditions, though the Trump administration hasn't yet released such a plan.

Pence accused the Democratic vice-presidential candidate of "undermining public confidence in a vaccine."

During the debate neither Pence nor Harris acknowledged whether they have had a conversation with their party’s presidential nominee about safeguards or procedures should either man become disabled.

President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden would be the oldest president ever if elected.

Pence instead used his two minutes to attack Harris’ doubt in Trump’s timeframe for a coronavirus vaccine.

His answer came in part of Trump’s recent coronavirus diagnosis.

For her part, Harris used her time to discuss her late mother’s status as an immigrant and her unlikely path to the Democratic ticket.

Though neither seems to suggest it’s important to discuss conversations with their running mates, both seem to agree it’s important for the American people to have details of the president’s health.

06:40 October 08

First topic about the coronavirus crisis

The coronavirus pandemic was the first topic at the vice presidential debate.

Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris takes the debate stage for the Vice Presidential Debate 2020

Washington: Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris are all set to square off on the debate stage Wednesday night.

The 90-minute debate will take place at 9 pm ET at the University of Utah's Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City. The prime time debate comes at a point where the coronavirus has reemerged as the leading issue after President Donald Trump's hospitalization.

Trump's coronavirus diagnosis and Vice President Mike Pence's possible exposure are bringing extra scrutiny to the already highly-anticipated showdown between VP Pence and Senator Kamala Harris. The running mates of President Trump and Democrat Joe Biden will take extra coronavirus precautions for the face-off.

The candidates will sit just over 12 feet apart, as opposed to the original 7 feet that had been planned. A pair of plexiglass barriers will separate the two and there will be no opening or closing statements by the participants. Pence and Harris will each be seated behind a desk, unlike the presidential debate. As was the case with the presidential debate, the candidates will be tested ahead of time and won't shake hands.

For the audience witnessing it live, there will be "a small number of ticketed guests" who will be tested before the debate, but they will be escorted out if they do not wear masks during the event.

The format of the debate will be similar to the widely panned first presidential debate between Trump and Joe Biden. It will be divided into nine segments of approximately 10 minutes each, and there will be no commercial breaks, according to the Commission on Presidential Debates. Unlike the presidential debate, topics are not being disclosed ahead of time.

Susan Page, USA Today's Washington bureau chief, will moderate. Page has covered six presidential administrations and 10 presidential elections.

The moderator will ask an opening question to Pence first, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond, the commission said. Page will use the balance of the time in the segment for a deeper discussion of the topic.

Page will be seated 12 feet away from the candidates as well.
